Process Improvement for Strategic Objectives
Prof. David Deeks
Abstract
PISO
® (Process Improvement for Strategic Objectives) is a step-by-step business process improvement method and means of requirements definition that channels the expertise and creativity of employee and other stakeholders. PISO
® provides a rapid means of designing real change in the workplace and improving information systems. To do this it engages stakeholders with the development of strategic objectives, which are put into effect within a logical view of a system.
The purpose of the presentation is to explain the key features of PISO®; the stakeholders, strategic objectives and data flow diagram (dfd) logicalisation. Whilst considered by many to be somewhat old-fashioned within computer systems development, it will be seen that dfds have found a new home within PISO®. The four stages of the PISO® method will be described, supported by dfds showing the 'before' and 'after' effects of a typical PISO® project and a brief description of how these were achieved. The latest PISO® developments will be mentioned.
Profile
David Deeks is Professor in Information Systems at the University of Sunderland. He has much experience in the application and teaching of systems analysis to students and professionals, having a particular interest in bringing 'real-world' aspects to his teaching and being noted for his innovative approaches. By background an engineer, David moved through production management to become an active systems practitioner. Now with more than thirty years in business and computer systems design and consultancy, he brings first-hand knowledge to the techniques he teaches. He is widely regarded for his effective way of getting his message across to students and systems professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds, offering training and consultancy to large and small organisations - latterly with an emphasis upon in Process Improvement for Strategic Objectives (PISO
®) method for business re-engineering as described here. PISO
® was initially born out of David's teaching background as an aid for business students learning systems analysis techniques, but is now gaining strong support in a wide range of private and public sector organisations - with several adopting it as their de facto means of process improvement. David is widely published in both academic and professional publications. With colleague Mark Lejk he is co-author of 'An introduction to Systems Analysis Techniques' (Addison-Wesley), the 2nd edition of which contains a full description of the PISO
® method. He is also author of 'The Information Systems Group Project' (BEP) - a multi-media teaching and learning pack, which facilitates the development of 'real-world' systems by teams of students. He is a Fellow of both The British Computer Society and The Institution of Analysts and Programmers.
