An intrusion detection system (IDS) monitors a network, watching for suspicious activity. One approach is anomaly detection, where the system evolves over time, generating and updating a model that represents what is normal. Harry’s talk explores the problems of intrusion detection and examines the applicability of hybrid intelligent systems technology (neural networks, Bayesian statistics, machine learning) to those problems. Dr. Erwin has a PhD in Computational Neuroscience and his primary research area is in biomimetic robotics as a member of the Hybrid Intelligent Systems group at Sunderland (http://www.his.sunderland.ac.uk/). He had many years of software, security, and software systems engineering experience at TRW, Northrup-Grumman, and Norden Systems prior to completing his PhD and continues teaching in those areas. In particular, he was the security architect for the United States Treasury Communications System. He was an adjunct lecturer and professor of computer science for seven years at George Mason University before joining the University of Sunderland as a Senior Lecturer of Computing and is a member of the IEEE, the IEEE Computer Society, and the ACM. .
