Although the games industry is not all play, it does give you a chance to work with
creative, intelligent people in a rich environment.
This talk is a brief guide to the games industry in the 21st century.
Starting with the creative design process, we will discuss the development cycle through to release of a typical game giving some examples from real projects that the author has had a part in.
This should give anyone seeking a job in the industry a chance to understand the processes and to focus on particular fields that will be sought by an employer. We discuss some of the roles that game developers can take.
The games industry is not just about developing games, an often a good way to learn about the industry is to work for a middleware developer or a publisher. We discuss some of the organisations that make up the industry other than game studios.
Starting in the '70s developing graphics demos and chess programmes, Andy
Thomason has worked both in the games industry and in more mainstream R&D roles.
Recently he has been presenting technical papers at developer conferences and writing general interest pieces for magazines on the industry.
He currently works on the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) tool chain in Bristol, where he develops optimizers for PS3 compilers.
